Chasing The Points Kills A Highly Lucrative UPromise Manufactured Spending Deal

Readers, you can thank me for killing a deal with UPromise. When they say, gift cards are not eligible for cash back they mean it. They reversed every transaction, including legitimate purchases (the $1 and $1.50 reversal were the legit transactions).

When I tried this, it tracked perfectly at 5%. Then I scaled up to purchase at $500 blocks of gift cards and UPromise and I was receiving anywhere from 7 to 9% back – that was weird altogether. I continued throughout the month amassing almost $1000 in cashback. All of a sudden, UPromise woke up one day and issued the correct amount, 5% which you can see on the very bottom. Then the following day on the top of the screenshot they reversed every charge:

There you have it, manufactured spending with UPromise is a your mileage may vary. Reader Rick has left data  about his experiences and wasn’t very promising either. Does that stop me from wanting to apply for the card? No it still hasn’t, I still want it to play around for MSing.

  • Which vendor were you buying from? I’ve bought giftcards through Staples and have gotten the cashback (it’s pending right now anyway), but they do not have any restrictions about buying giftcards listed in the cashback terms.

    • I can’t say on the vendor, I’m still debating about posting/still researching this opportunity. I can confirm, it wasn’t Staples.

  • Problem w buying those GCs at the prefrred office store is that the pending take months. 3-4 to be exact until they turn into your cash. So a lot can go wrong in between. Im winding down on that as its not worth my time anymore to wait 3-5 mos for my money is “too much”

    • I have a few pending items from late December from Upromise + Staples and 3 to 5 months is painfully long. I feel like TCB or Big Crumbs pays out faster than that

  • CTP, didn’t realize you were writing on Upromise experience today as well. I have a lot pending but no issues yet, then again I’m mostly buying actual stuff except for some Kohls gift cards from Staples mixed in, which per Jennifer’s comment may not be prohibited.

    • That’s funny! Very coincidental. Yup, mine was all GC’s, a little disappointing.

  • just as a data point, i used staples gift card to partially pay for another gift card sold by staples on 2/10. received a call today from staples and the rep specifically stated that i can’t use gift card to buy gift card. the rep wanted another form of payment at which point i told the rep to cancel my order. this might be an isolated incident. i will try again and report back.

      • Interesting experience. What kind of gift card did you use and buy? I haven’t really churned that way, to receive a phone call about my purchases

  • I’ve actually gotten my portal money pretty quickly, but the upromise CC money isn’t showing up.

    • Did the statement close? I would have thought they’d show up at the same time
